The search for stonemasons’ marks in Scotland began as a “light-bulb” moment during a visit to Crookston Castle in Glasgow. Since then, a Research Masters has been completed at the University of Glasgow, under the supervision of Professor Stephen Driscoll, Professor of Historical Archaeology. This initial research surveyed eleven sites and identified almost 3000 masons’ marks belonging to c1200 different masons.
