Leaving a mark on History “These masons’ marks are of peculiar interest, and form a special branch of study, at present but little understood.” (Mylne 1893, 7)

About Us

The Scottish Stonemasons Marks Project is investigating and recording masons’ marks on the medieval castles and churches of Scotland. Initially focusing on buildings begun between 1100 and 1300, we are recording marks and looking at distribution patterns both within individual buildings, and across Scotland, to identify the size and mobility of this highly skilled workforce.
